Search for Next State Surveyor
Following the retirement of John Thornton in December 2019, the Arkansas GIS Office, a division of the Department of Transformation and Shared Services, has initiated the search for the next State Surveyor of Arkansas. The State Surveyor leads the Division of Land Surveys and fulfills a vital role in the perpetuation of the public land survey system (PLSS), in the archival of survey plats, and promoting the establishment of uniform professional surveying and mapping methods and standards for the State of Arkansas.
Act 8 of 2015 First Extraordinary Session of 2015 changed the law guiding the appointment of the State Surveyor. It requires consultation between the State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Surveyors, the Arkansas Society of Professional Surveyors and the Arkansas GIS Board. A panel representing these organizations convened and is beginning the search process.
