Note from ASPS President, Marie Dugan:This past Wednesday afternoon, John Thornton our Legislative Chair, Courtney Sheppard from Government Solutions, and I went to visit Senator Jerry Taylor. Our mission was to try to communicate our concerns about the stressful situation we have been experiencing in regard to the revision of the Minimum Standards. We let him know that we wish to have those who are working on a revision to the Minimum Standard take a level headed approach. The "taskforce" to join Cotton Green in reviewing the Minimum Standards are Clovis Satterfield, Phillip Sloan, Troy Sheets, Don Brooks, Clay Wynn and most recently added - Tim Tyler.
The Senator shared with us a Bill that he has
now introduced as SB190. This Bill would make the term of the State
Surveyor run concurrently with the term of the Commissioner of State Lands
and prohibit service of over eight (8) years. I am attaching a copy. The
Bill refers to Arkansas
Association of Registered Land Surveyors, our organization's previous
name. We asked that he change it to Arkansas
Society for Professional Surveyors. We told the Senator that we
weren't sure whether we would actively support it, but that we do feel
that the position of the State Surveyor is important. He said that he does too and that he feels that this
change is best for surveying in Arkansas.
We left on a cordial note. Senator Taylor has been our friend, and I think
he does have the best interest of surveying in his heart. Let me hear your
thoughts on the proposed SB190.
